An inlay or onlay is a custom filling made of tooth-colored porcelain, other composite material, or even gold.
Inlays or onlays can be utilized to conservatively repair your tooth that has a large defective filling or has been damaged by decay or trauma.
Inlay
An inlay is an ideal alternative to a conventional silver or composite filling. Also, it’s more conservative than a crown (cap) because less of your tooth structure is removed.
Onlay
An onlay is essentially identical to an inlay with the exception that one or more of the chewing cusps have also been affected and need to be included in the restoration. An onlay is sometimes also referred to as a partial crown.
As with most dental restorations, an inlay or onlay is not always permanent and may someday need to be replaced due to normal wear.

What does it involve?
Getting an inlay or onlay usually requires two appointments. It includes taking several highly accurate impressions (molds) that will be used to create your custom inlay or onlay and a temporary restoration.
Your Visit
While your tooth is numb, Dr. Ochev removes any decay and/or old filling materials. He thoroughly cleans and carefully prepares the space, shaping the surface to properly fit the restoration. He applies a temporary filling to protect the tooth while a dental laboratory makes your custom inlay or onlay.
Your Second Visit
Dr. Ochev removes the temporary filling and then carefully and precisely cements your new inlay or onlay into place. A few adjustments may be necessary to ensure a proper fit and a comfortable bite.
Caring for Your New Inlay or Onlay
You’ll receive care instructions at the end of your treatment. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new inlay or onlay.
