What are dental crowns?

Dental crowns are tooth-shaped caps. Unlike a filling, a dental crown encases the entire surface of the tooth restoring it to its original shape and size.

It protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with a filling or other types of restorations.

Although there are several types of crowns, a porcelain (tooth-colored) crown is the most popular, because it resembles your natural teeth. Specifically, it’s made to match the shape, size, and color or your teeth.

As with most dental restorations, a crown is not always permanent and may someday need to be replaced due to normal wear.

It’s highly durable and will last many years, giving you a long-lasting, beautiful smile.

What do dental crowns involve?

Getting a crown usually requires two appointments. It includes taking several highly accurate impressions (molds) that will be used to create a temporary crown and your new, custom crown.

Your Visit

While your tooth is numb, Dr. Ochev removes any decay and shapes the surface to properly fit your crown. After a digital scan is done, the temporary crown is placed with temporary cement and ensures that you’re biting properly. You’ll wear the temporary crown for approximately two weeks while a dental laboratory makes your custom crown.

Your Second Visit

Dr. Ochev removes the temporary crown, cleans your tooth, and carefully places your new crown to ensure the spacing and your bite are accurate.

Caring for Your New Crown

You’ll receive care instructions at the end of your treatment. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new crown.
