Dental Exams & Teeth Cleanings
DR. IGOR OCHEV, SAN RAFAEL DENTIST

Why do regular checkups and cleanings matter so much?

One big reason is they can prevent many problems from developing in the first place. Not only that, they can help spot problems early on when treatment is likely to be simpler and more affordable. Visiting us regularly is also important because some diseases or medical conditions have symptoms that can appear in the mouth.

A few other reasons why preventative dental check-ups are important and makes sense:

  • Removing the plaque and tartar from your teeth prevents bone loss around them
  • Regular checks can identify and replace old fillings that are starting to fail
  • A broken tooth may be avoided by placing a porcelain onlay on a fracture line before it becomes an issue

DENTAL EXAMS & CLEANINGS
What to Expect

At your initial visit, Dr. Igor Ochev performs a comprehensive dental exam. NOTE: If you are a new patient, one of our registered dental hygienists performs your cleaning at your return visit after Dr. Ochev reviews the findings and treatment options with you. For a same day exam and cleaning, you must request it when you book your first appointment.

Dental Exams

Examination of Diagnostic X-rays

Dental X-rays are essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss. They also help determine tooth and root positions.

Oral Cancer Screening

Your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums are checked for any signs of oral cancer.

Gum Disease Evaluation

The gums and bone around your teeth are checked for any signs of periodontal disease.

Examination of Tooth Decay

Tooth surfaces are checked for decay with special dental instruments.

Examination of Existing Restorations

The condition or your current fillings, crowns and other restorations are checked.

Teeth Cleanings

Tartar Removal

Tartar is hardened plaque (calculus) that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to its surface. It forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.

Plaque Removal

Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on your teeth. It’s a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva. The bacteria produce toxins that inflame the gums. This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease.

Polishing

Stain and plaque that’s not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling are removed.
